## Description
Mona Lisa Smile is a 2003 drama film directed by Mike Newell, starring Julia Roberts in the lead role. Set in 1950s America, the film follows Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), a progressive art history professor who takes a teaching position at Wellesley College, a prestigious women’s institution known for its tradition of preparing students for marriage and domestic life. Katherine, passionate about art and deeply committed to expanding her students’ horizons, challenges the prevailing social expectations through her unconventional teaching methods. She encourages her students to question their prescribed roles and consider paths beyond marriage and motherhood. The story centers on several students—the brilliant and rebellious Joan, the emotionally torn Betty, and the gentle and compliant Livvy—each of whom, inspired by Katherine, begins to realize they have the power to choose their own futures. With sensitivity and nuance, the film captures the struggles of women navigating tradition and self-determination in the 1950s, earning its reputation as “a female Dead Poets Society.”
